Sony unveiled the FX5 compact cinema camera.

The Sony FX5 is powered by a new 16.6-megapixel full-frame Exmor RS CMOS sensor, paired with a BIONZ XR2 processor with a built-in AI engine. This powerhouse handles not only image processing but also autofocus, object recognition, and other intelligent camera features. One of the key features is support for Open Gate mode, which allows the FX5 to utilize the entire sensor to record 3:2 video at 5K resolution. This is especially convenient for creating horizontal and vertical versions of footage, as well as working with anamorphic lenses. The FX5 is also the first Cinema Line FX camera to offer internal 16-bit RAW recording in the X-OCN format. Users can choose from the X-OCN LT, X-OCN C1, and X-OCN C2 formats, two of which are designed for smaller file sizes. Depending on the selected mode, the camera supports 5K recording at up to 120 fps, and 4K video at up to 240 fps. For shooting in challenging lighting conditions, the camera features three native ISO values: 800, 4000, and 12800. Dual Gain Shooting technology also features dual gain, which combines data from different gain levels to expand dynamic range and reduce noise. The camera supports AI-powered autofocus with face and pose detection, and features 5-axis image stabilization. Camera operators benefit from a 3.5-inch, high-resolution tilting touchscreen, a built-in cooling system, two USB ports, a wired LAN interface, and an updated menu system inspired by Sony's professional CineAlta cameras. The manufacturer offers a separate detachable DVF-EL1 viewfinder, and for professional audio work, a new XLR-H2 grip. When used with the grip, the camera supports 32-bit floating-point recording. Sales of the camera are scheduled to begin in August 2026.
